GCAP/Tempest Programme

Programme Overview

The Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), formerly known as Tempest, is a collaborative sixth-generation fighter development between the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan. The programme represents one of the most ambitious international defence collaborations in history.

GCAP aims to deliver operational capability by 2035, replacing the Eurofighter Typhoon in UK and Italian service, and the F-2 in Japan Air Self-Defense Force service.

Programme Partners

  • BAE Systems (United Kingdom) - Programme Lead
  • Leonardo (Italy) - Airframe & Systems
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Japan) - Airframe & Integration
  • Rolls-Royce - Propulsion Systems
  • MBDA - Weapons Integration

VELON-G™ metamaterial canopy technology for GCAP/Tempest

VELON-G™

Graphene-ITO Metamaterial Canopy

Belvyon's VELON-G™ metamaterial canopy technology addresses the critical GCAP requirement for electromagnetic signature management while maintaining the optical transparency essential for pilot situational awareness.

The only transparent product in the Belvyon portfolio, VELON-G™ is a volumetric metamaterial canopy combining graphene nanoplatelets with ITO in a nanocomposite architecture validated in space environments.

Belvyon Value Proposition

Why VELON-G™ is the optimal solution for GCAP/Tempest canopy requirements

Signature Reduction

-13.3 dB W-band attenuation at 94.48 GHz reduces cockpit contribution to overall aircraft radar cross-section, critical for 6th generation stealth requirements.

Maintained Transparency

92.5% optical transparency preserves pilot situational awareness and full compatibility with HUD/HMD systems essential for combat operations.

ITAR-Free UK Origin

UK-developed technology enables direct supply to all three GCAP partner nations without US export control restrictions.

Proven Maturity

ISS/JAXA-Kibo validated technology (Experiment ID 8071) demonstrates performance in the most extreme operational environments.

Trilateral Compatibility

Single source supply compatible with UK, Italian, and Japanese regulatory frameworks, simplifying programme logistics.

Scalable Production

Manufacturing capability designed for programme-scale production volumes supporting GCAP fleet requirements.
